Egmond Plastic is a specialist in evaporation technology. In short, it comes down to the evaporation of aluminum, which precipitates on the products as an aluminum layer.
The process can be described as follows:
During high vacuum metallization by evaporation, the aluminum first melts and then creates a "cloud" of aluminum vapor. This aluminum vapor deposits on a plastic surface. This results in a thin aluminum film.
In a perfect vacuum condition (6×1010-5mbar), aluminum molecules precipitate on all surfaces without resistance from air or gas particles. In this way, the plastic surfaces are covered with a uniform layer of pure aluminum.
Before the high vacuum coating process, the plastic surfaces must be leveled by a varnish coat. This gives the substrate better adhesion and a smooth surface to make the aluminum layer shiny.
This aluminum layer can be covered by a protective varnish. By coloring this varnish, effects such as gold color can be obtained.
This technique is mainly used for functional purposes, such as reflectors and mirrors or for aesthetic purposes, such as components for central heating systems, for example.
